The Kotayk Survey Project starts in 2013. This joint Armenian- Italian project is aimed at studying the upper Hrazdan river valley, located in the northern part of the Kotayk region in Armenia. The project is based on a scientific cooperation agreement between the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Yerevan Academy of Sciences (NAS RA) and ISMEO, under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) of the Italian Republic (code ARC-001096).

The main objectives of the Archaeological Mission can be summarized as follows:

  • The creation of an archaeological map between the upper valley of the Hrazdan river and the western foothills of the Geghama mountain range, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages.
  • The study of human presence during prehistory in the Hrazdan gorge and in the Mount Guthanasar area.
  • The study of the phenomena that led to the formation of the first complex societies in the area (Late Bronze – Early Iron Age).
  • The analysis of the Urartean presence in the area, the first state of the region (Middle Age of Iron).
